How does Invisalign work?

Making the decision to transform your smile is a big step for anyone. It’s an opportunity to improve your oral health and boost your self-confidence. Invisalign has become popular with patients because it offers a virtually invisible alternative to braces that produces fast results but also takes away the aggravation of uncomfortable wires and regular, painful adjustments.

It is the most advanced clear aligner system in the world proven to correct a number of dental problems, from under and overbites to overcrowded or gapped teeth.

Here’s what you can expect from Invisalign’s industry-leading technology and treatment:

Before your Invisalign treatment

Your dentist will first examine your teeth and discuss your priorities and goals with you. Based on the condition of your teeth and your objectives, your dentist will then create a treatment plan specifically designed for you. To guide your treatment, we will take X-rays and photographs of your teeth and jaw. We will also create a 3D map of your teeth using an iTero Element scanner to ensure your aligners will fit your teeth and effectively work to move them towards the best position. Think of it as a road map to your new smile.

You will be provided with a simulation of how your teeth will look after treatment and will find out your treatment timeline during this consultation.

What happens during the treatment?

Your custom Invisalign aligners are made from an elastic thermoplastic material that applies pressure to the teeth to move them back into place. Your aligners are designed in a series of trays and are typically made to move/straighten your teeth up to 0.25mm per tray.

You will receive your first eight aligners which will see you through your first eight weeks of treatment. From there, your dentist will monitor your teeth and will provide new aligners based on your needs throughout the treatment. In most cases, you will receive a new set of Invisalign invisible braces every eight weeks.

How long will my Invisalign treatment take?

The length of your treatment will depend on your specific needs and will be determined by your dentist. The average treatment for an adult is between 6 and 12 months, but more complex needs may need more time. The goal of your Invisalign treatment is to get your teeth straight to achieve the perfect smile.

What can I expect after I complete my Invisalign treatment?

Once you’ve reached the goal of your Invisalign treatment – a great smile – your doctor will likely recommend retainers to keep your teeth in place. A common solution to stop teeth shifting back into their pre-treatment position after any Invisalign or standard wire and bracket braces, retainers will keep your smile looking amazing long after treatment.
